Alamo - Professor X Recruiting

(Shared on Instagram: 3/25/25)

This is one of my favorite sketches I’ve written for @ucbtny — largely because @davidcebert and @murfmeyer absolutely knocked it out of the park. Ebert went above and beyond to make Professor X’s wheelchair out of a desk chair and… boxes? Cloth? I’m not sure! And he and @korpuskrista spent ages perfecting his bald cap.

The original thing that sparked this idea was that I always loved how, in the X-Men series, Professor X reassures new recruits by saying they’ll meet gifted people “just like them” at his school, when actually some students are literally big monsters and other students are teeny little kids who have nothing in common.

But while writing it, the core unusual thing shifted and broadened a bit. Instead, it became about Professor Xavier being bad at describing any element of the school in general — not just misrepresenting the student body.

It’s a great example of how the original hook of an idea can sometimes evolve in a slightly different direction. And ALSO a great example of how a talented team of actors can really bring a sketch to life.
